Centurion Lounge Guide 2026: Every Location, Access Rules, and What to Expect
Centurion Lounges are run by American Express for Amex Platinum cardholders. As of May 2026, there are 35+ locations globally. They are the highest-rated proprietary airport lounges in the US by community consensus: full dining, full bars, shower suites, and consistently better food than Priority Pass alternatives at the same airports.
The main limitation is crowding. At the most popular locations — JFK, LAX, DCA — afternoon waitlists are real. This guide covers both the access rules and the timing strategies that make the difference between a relaxed visit and a 45-minute wait outside.

What Changed Recently

How to Get Into a Centurion Lounge
Required credentials (all three):
- Amex Platinum card or Amex Centurion card (the physical card or digital wallet version)
- Same-day departing boarding pass
- Arrival within 3 hours of scheduled departure time (verified May 2026)
Show both the card and the boarding pass at the entrance desk. The lounge staff will check both. If you hold the Platinum but arrive more than 3 hours early, you will be turned away until you are within the window.
Connecting passengers (effective July 8, 2026): The entry window expands to 5 hours before your connecting flight’s departure. You must still have a same-day departing flight at that airport.
Priority Pass does not work here. Centurion access requires the Amex Platinum specifically. Priority Pass is a separate network. The Amex Platinum does include Priority Pass Select enrollment for Priority Pass properties, but the relationship does not run in both directions.
Guest Fees and the Family Traveler Math
Guest policy (verified americanexpress.com May 2026):
- $50 per adult guest
- $30 per child (ages 2 to 17)
- Children under 2: complimentary with proof of age or lap infant boarding pass
- Maximum 2 paid guests per visit
- Guests complimentary for cardholders with $75,000+ in eligible purchases in the calendar year
- Starting July 8, 2026: Guests must travel on the same flight as the cardholder
Dealbreaker: Family of 4
Cardholder + spouse + 2 children (ages 5 and 10): $50 adult guest + $30 child + $30 child = $110 in guest fees per visit, on top of the $895 annual fee. A family of 5 hits the 2-guest maximum, meaning one person cannot enter.
For family travelers, Capital One Venture X includes free guest access for the cardholder plus guests — and Venture X lounge locations at DFW, IAD, DEN, and LAS have no per-visit guest fees VERIFY: capitalone.com. The Chase Sapphire Reserve also has more favorable guest terms at Sapphire Lounge locations.
If you travel primarily with family, the Centurion guest fee math often favors a different card.

International Centurion Lounge Locations
International Centurion locations include Hong Kong, Mexico City, Buenos Aires, and London Heathrow (the “Escape by Centurion” affiliate at Terminal 3). The international network is smaller than the US network. What to Expect Inside
Food and dining. Centurion Lounges operate a full kitchen with rotating menus, hot stations, a cheese and charcuterie section, and made-to-order options at most locations. The food is prepared fresh — you are not eating pre-wrapped sandwiches from a case. The JFK, LAX, and MIA locations receive the highest food quality ratings by community consensus. Bar. Full service bar at all locations: wines, spirits, cocktails, beer, non-alcoholic options. The bar is a consistent highlight in community reports — the cocktail quality at JFK and LAX is mentioned specifically as a differentiator from other premium lounges.
Shower suites. Available at most US locations at no charge. Book with the front desk on arrival. Morning visits have the best availability. Shower suite wait times at busy locations (JFK, LAX) can run 30 to 60 minutes during peak periods. If a shower is important to your visit, arrive early and put your name on the list immediately.
Work areas. Dedicated workspace at all locations. Wi-Fi is generally fast. The quality and seat availability of work areas varies by location and time of day.
Spa services. Select locations offer spa services (JFK is the primary example). Verify availability at your specific location at americanexpress.com before your trip.
The Crowding Problem: Honest Assessment
The Centurion network’s cardholder base grew faster than its physical lounge capacity. The fee increase to $895 was partly intended to address this by reducing casual cardholders, but the popular US locations still have real crowd problems during peak windows.
Worst locations for crowding (r/amex, multiple reports Jan–May 2026):
- DCA (Reagan National): Consistently the most crowded Centurion in the network by community reports. The DC area concentration of Amex Platinum holders and the airport’s business travel volume create the highest utilization rate in the network.
- JFK: 4 to 7pm waitlists are standard on weekdays during international departure banks. Multiple reports of 30 to 60 minute waits at the entrance. Not an exaggeration — plan around this window.
- LAX: Evening international departure peaks, particularly transatlantic and transpacific banks. The TBIT lounge can reach capacity during these windows.
- ORD: Friday afternoons are the worst window. The business travel cycle creates a predictable traffic peak.
Best locations for low crowds:
- PHL, CLT, SLC, HNL: Lower overall airport traffic volume means proportionally lighter crowds at these Centurion locations.
- SEA, BOS, BNA: Mid-tier traffic airports with Centurion access that are generally manageable outside peak windows.
More Centurion locations does not mean better access. At co-located airports where both Centurion and Chase Sapphire Lounges exist (JFK, LAS), the Chase Sapphire Lounge is currently less crowded and receives equal or higher food quality ratings from community reporters. Having Centurion access does not mean using it is always the right call — a shorter wait and a better meal at the adjacent Sapphire Lounge is the better decision at peak hours.
5 Timing Strategies to Avoid the Wait

Arrive before noon
The 6am to noon window is the most relaxed at every Centurion. Morning domestic departures are frequent but international departure banks are in the afternoon — and international travelers are the heaviest lounge users.
Avoid 4–7pm at JFK, LAX, DCA, ORD
Transatlantic and transpacific departure banks drive lounge traffic spikes at these four airports during this window. The timing is predictable and consistent.
Late evening visits after 8pm
The crowd that came for the 4–7pm departures has cleared. If you have a late-evening flight, arriving after 8pm often means a completely different lounge experience than arriving at 5pm.
Use Sapphire Lounge at JFK or LAS if waitlisted
Both airports have Chase Sapphire Lounges adjacent to or near the Centurion. CSR holders: if the Centurion has a line, walk over. Community rates the food quality equally or higher.
Capital One Lounge at JFK T4
The Capital One Lounge opened in JFK Terminal 4 and is an additional zero-wait option for Venture X cardholders at the same terminal as the Centurion.

The LAS Sidecar: What Makes Las Vegas Different
The Las Vegas Centurion location is called “Sidecar by Centurion.” It differs from every other location in the network in one critical way: the entry window is 90 minutes before departure only, not the standard 3 hours.
This is a Las Vegas-specific rule and it is enforced. Arriving at the Sidecar 2 hours before your flight will result in being turned away, regardless of Amex Platinum status. Come back when you are within the 90-minute window.
The lounge is also smaller in physical footprint than most Centurion locations. The food quality is consistent with the broader network, but the space and the time restriction create a different experience than visiting JFK or LAX.
If you are in Las Vegas and hold both the Amex Platinum and the Chase Sapphire Reserve, the Chase Sapphire Lounge at LAS (called “The Runway”) operates with a standard 3-hour entry window and community reports rate it highly for food quality. Many LAS-based Platinum holders use the Sapphire Lounge as the primary lounge and treat the Sidecar as an option only when timing works.
LAS is my home airport. I use the Sidecar by Centurion and the Chase Sapphire Lounge “The Runway” regularly.
The 90-minute entry window at the Sidecar is real — I have been turned away for arriving at 95 minutes. The rule is enforced without exception. If your flight is at 8pm, you cannot enter until 6:30pm. Plan your airport arrival around this, not around what time you want to be in the lounge.
In practice: when I have both cards and time flexibility, I use The Runway at LAS. The food quality is comparable to the Sidecar, the space is better, and the 3-hour standard window gives more flexibility. The Sidecar is the right choice when the Runway is full or when I don’t have the CSR with me on that trip.
For standard Centurion visits at JFK and LAX, the food quality is noticeably above other premium lounges at those airports. The morning timing strategy works. Arriving at JFK at 9am for an 11am flight means a completely different experience than arriving at 5pm for a 7pm flight.

The Centurion’s reputation for overcrowding is airport-specific, not universal. Reports from MIA, SEA, SLC, HNL, CLT, and PHL consistently describe manageable crowds and short or no waits. The crowding issue is concentrated at 4 to 5 locations — JFK, LAX, DCA, ORD — and within specific time windows at those airports. Treating “the Centurion is overcrowded” as a universal statement is inaccurate. The experience at a morning SEA visit is categorically different from a Friday 5pm DCA visit.
