LAX Airport Guide 2026: Terminals, Lounges, Food & Transportation

A practical guide to terminal connections, lounge eligibility, airport dining, and getting into Los Angeles without relying on outdated transit information.

How this guide was researched

Official information, not a claimed firsthand LAX visit

This update uses LAX airport maps and terminal guidance, LA Metro transit information, the airport’s FlyAway and LAX-it pages, and published lounge information. Terminal operations, lounge eligibility, restaurant tenants and transport services can change. This is a research-based planning guide; it does not claim that the author personally tested every route or lounge.

LAX Airport at a Glance

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) serves the Los Angeles region from its location near the Pacific coast. Its numbered terminals and Terminal B form a U-shaped terminal complex. The biggest planning decision is usually not which terminal has the highest-rated lounge: it is where your airline asks you to check in, where your flight actually departs, and how much walking time you have.

Key LAX planning facts

Where are Uber/Lyft pickups?Follow current LAX-it instructions for standard ride-app pickups; exceptions and accessibility arrangements can vary

LAX Terminal Guide: Airlines, Connections and Lounges

Important: LAX check-in terminals and actual departure gates are not always the same. Some airlines use bus transfers or gates in Terminal B. The examples below are for orientation, not a substitute for your itinerary. See the official 2026 airline location map before departure.

Airline assignments may change with construction and operational needs. For an exact terminal, use the airline boarding pass and LAX’s official information.

How Do You Transfer Between LAX Terminals?

Most ticketed passengers can walk between all LAX terminals without leaving the secure area. LAX’s official inter-terminal page describes a continuous post-security pedestrian route, with an approximately two-mile walk from Terminal 1 to Terminal 8. Connectors, bridges and tunnels make this possible; a cross-airport lounge visit may still be impractical if boarding is soon.

  1. Find your departure gate first. Gate and check-in locations may differ.
  2. Follow post-security terminal connector signs. Use the official terminal connections page and pedestrian route map.
  3. Account for the whole walk. LAX’s airline location map advises roughly 10–15 minutes between some adjacent terminals; longer routes can take substantially more.
  4. For international arrivals, follow immigration and customs instructions. Entering the United States may require baggage collection, recheck and security screening even if terminals are connected.
  5. Use landside shuttles if appropriate. Free terminal-connector shuttle services are available outside security, but exiting may require another screening.
Key distinction

Reachable does not mean convenient

A lounge in Terminal B may be physically reachable from a domestic terminal after security. But if the walk would put your boarding time at risk, stay near your departure gate. Allow extra time for mobility needs, traveling with children, and temporary detours.

Best LAX Airport Lounges: What Can You Actually Access?

The right LAX lounge depends on your card or membership, airline, cabin, same-day flight, guest policy and time available. There is no single lounge that is best for every passenger. Card benefits and participating Priority Pass lounges change, so treat this as a starting point rather than a guarantee of admission.

Terminal B — The Centurion Lounge

American Express lists the Centurion Lounge in the Tom Bradley International Terminal. It advertises food, drinks, Wi-Fi, showers and a children’s room. Its published location is after security, near the Great Hall bridge and elevator lobby. Entry is subject to eligible-card terms, boarding-pass requirements, guest rules and space availability. Check the official Amex LAX lounge listing for hours and entry requirements.

Who should consider it? Eligible Amex Platinum or other qualifying cardholders with enough time to walk to Terminal B and return to their gate. Do not assume a particular wait time or complimentary guest access.

Terminal 3 — Delta Sky Club

Eligible Delta travelers may have access to Delta Sky Club through qualifying membership, cabin, status or cards. Some eligible Amex and Delta-branded cards have visit limits and other conditions. Verify the specific card and same-day itinerary through Delta’s official Sky Club page.

American Airlines — Admirals Club

Admirals Club access is tied to qualifying memberships, certain premium-cabin itineraries, or eligible co-branded cards. Locations and eligible itineraries can vary, especially during terminal construction. See American Airlines’ Admirals Club information.

United Airlines — United Club

United Club options serve eligible United and partner-airline passengers. Card membership, cabin and other conditions determine access. Confirm details at United’s lounge information.

Priority Pass and Credit-Card Lounge Access

Priority Pass is not the same as unrestricted access to every airport lounge. Participating locations, operating hours, capacity restrictions and guest charges depend on your membership and card issuer. Check Priority Pass’s LAX directory and your issuer’s benefits before walking across terminals. Do not assume that Chase Sapphire Reserve Priority Pass includes airport restaurant credits; that benefit was discontinued in 2024.

Where Should You Eat at LAX?

LAX dining choices depend on terminal, gate location and time of day. Terminal B’s Great Hall has a broad selection of fast meals, sit-down options and coffee. LAX’s official directory lists outlets such as Border Grill, 800 Degrees Pizza, Umami Burger, Panda Express, Pret A Manger and others, but availability and opening hours may change.

Choose food based on your time before boarding
Time availableSuggested approachWhy
Under 30 minutesGrab-and-go near your gateA cross-terminal walk may use your remaining boarding buffer

Getting to and from LAX in 2026

There is no single best transport choice. Metro is often the budget option; FlyAway is straightforward for Union Station and Van Nuys; ride-apps and taxis are useful for door-to-door trips. The important 2026 detail is that the Metro Transit Center is open, but the airport Automated People Mover was still not operating for passengers at this review.

1. Metro C and K Lines + Free Airport Shuttle

Take the C or K Line to LAX/Metro Transit Center, then connect to the airport terminals using the free, frequent shuttle. LA Metro also lists bus connections at the transit center. Metro’s published regular fare is $1.75, but check current fares, service alerts and routing before departure. Official Metro LAX instructions.

2. FlyAway Bus to Union Station or Van Nuys

FlyAway serves Union Station and Van Nuys, with pickup and drop-off at airport terminals. The official FlyAway fare page lists a $12.75 one-way fare at this review; do not rely on older $9.75 figures still found in archived schedules. Check the FlyAway route page and fare information before purchasing.

3. Uber, Lyft and Taxis — Follow LAX-it Signs

For standard arrivals, LAX directs many ride-app and taxi pickups to the LAX-it pickup area. Follow airport signs and your app’s instructions rather than assuming you will be picked up directly outside baggage claim. Accessible pickup arrangements and premium services may differ. See LAX’s official LAX-it page.

4. Rental Cars and Hotel Shuttles

Rental-car and hotel shuttles use designated pickup areas. Confirm the exact location with your rental company or hotel and follow airport signage. Do not assume the new Automated People Mover will be available for your travel date.

Rideshare / taxiDoor-to-door trips, groups or substantial luggagePickup location, traffic, surge pricing
Rental carMulti-stop Southern California tripsRental counter transfers, parking and traffic

How Early Should You Arrive at LAX?

Follow your airline’s check-in and baggage cutoff times, not a single universal rule. As a broad planning starting point, many travelers budget about two hours before domestic departures and about three hours before international departures, with additional time for peak traffic, checked bags, family travel, accessibility needs or terminal construction. These are planning allowances, not guaranteed airport or airline requirements.

Check your airline’s instructions, real-time road conditions, TSA screening information and boarding time. If you want to visit a lounge in another terminal, add walking time without cutting into your gate-arrival buffer.

What Changed in 2026

The Metro Transit Center is open; the airport train is still pending

The LAX/Metro Transit Center opened in 2025 and provides connections to Metro rail and airport shuttles. The separate airport Automated People Mover was delayed again in September 2026, with a reported target in early 2027 that was not guaranteed. Do not plan your 2026 trip around riding the people mover. Also, LAX’s published 2026 airline map reflects terminal and check-in arrangements that may differ from older online guides.

Common LAX Mistakes to Avoid

  • Believing all terminals are disconnected after security. LAX has a post-security pedestrian network, but some walks are long.
  • Confusing check-in terminal with departure gate. Some carriers use bus transfers or Terminal B gates.
  • Assuming the airport people mover is running. It had not opened to passengers by this review.
  • Relying on an old FlyAway fare. Verify the current price directly.
  • Assuming a credit card includes restaurant credits or free guests. Issuer-specific Priority Pass rules differ.
  • Crossing the airport for a lounge too close to boarding. A reachable lounge is not always worth the walk.
Best Backup Plan

What to do when your first plan doesn’t work

  • Preferred lounge full? Check the official lounge directory and your card’s current participating locations; otherwise use nearby dining and seating.
  • Short connection? Go directly to the onward gate, follow the signed secure-side route and contact your airline if your connection is at risk.
  • People mover not operating? Use the free airport shuttle from the Metro Transit Center or the transport service currently operating for your route.
  • Rideshare pickup confusing? Follow LAX-it signs and the app’s current pickup instructions; ask airport staff about accessibility alternatives if needed.
  • Flight delayed overnight? Confirm airline rebooking and accommodation policies before purchasing a hotel or leaving the airport.

Frequently Asked Questions About LAX

Are LAX terminals connected after security?

Yes. LAX says ticketed passengers can use a connected post-security pedestrian route across its terminals. The full Terminal 1–Terminal 8 route is approximately two miles, so allow sufficient walking time and check for temporary detours.

Can I visit the Centurion Lounge if my flight leaves from another LAX terminal?

Potentially, yes. The Terminal B lounge is reachable through the airport’s post-security network, but you must satisfy Amex’s current entry rules and leave enough time to return to your departure gate. Admission is subject to capacity.

Is the LAX Automated People Mover open in October 2026?

No passenger opening had been confirmed as of October 21, 2026. Use existing airport shuttles, LAX-it, FlyAway and other operating ground transport services.

How do I take Metro to LAX?

Use the Metro C or K Line to LAX/Metro Transit Center and transfer to the free airport terminal shuttle. Check Metro’s official journey planner for your route and any service alerts.

Where do I pick up Uber or Lyft at LAX?

Standard ride-app pickups generally use the LAX-it area. Follow the current airport signs and instructions in your ride-app, since pickup rules and exceptions may change.

Does Chase Sapphire Reserve Priority Pass include airport restaurant credits?

No. Chase removed the Priority Pass restaurant benefit for Sapphire Reserve cardholders in 2024. Eligible lounge access is separate and depends on current Chase and Priority Pass terms.

How much is the LAX FlyAway bus?

The official FlyAway fare page listed $12.75 for a one-way ticket when this guide was reviewed. Confirm the fare before travel, as older schedules may show outdated prices.

How early should I arrive at LAX?

Follow your airline’s specific deadlines. A common planning allowance is around two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international flights, with more time for traffic, checked bags or special circumstances.
