Amex Platinum Card Review 2026: Is It Worth the $895 Annual Fee?
The Amex Platinum annual fee is $895 (verified May 2026). That number reads as expensive until you look at the credit portfolio: airline fees, hotels, entertainment, CLEAR, and more totaling $1,000+ on paper. The question is not whether the credits exist — they do. The question is whether you will actually use them.
This review covers who the Amex Platinum is worth it for, who should skip it, the credit-by-credit reality check, the lounge access breakdown, and what actual cardholders report after a year of carrying the card.
Quick Answer
Annual fee: $895 Verified May 2026
Worth it if: You fly 6+ times per year through Centurion airports and can realistically capture $500+ in credits. Most frequent flyers land an effective fee of $200–$400.
Not worth it if: Your home airport has no Centurion Lounge, you can’t use the monthly credit categories, or you fly fewer than 4 times per year.
Best lounge access in the US: The only consumer card with Centurion access (35+ locations) + Delta Sky Club (10 visits/year) + Priority Pass Select.
Primary alternative: Capital One Venture X at $395 fee with $300 travel credit (effective ~$95) for travelers who need Priority Pass and Capital One Lounge but don’t need Centurion.

The Verdict
Worth it for frequent flyers who can capture $500+ in credits
The Amex Platinum works for one type of traveler: someone who flies 6+ times per year through Centurion airports and whose spending patterns naturally overlap with the credit categories. For those travelers, the effective annual cost is $200–$400 and the lounge access alone justifies the card.
For everyone else — infrequent travelers, people whose airports don’t have Centurion, or people who won’t use the credit categories — the card is expensive for what you actually use.
Get It If You…
- Fly 6+ times per year through Centurion airports
- Fly Delta regularly (10 Sky Club visits/year)
- Can capture $500+ in credits without changing spending habits
- Want the broadest single-card lounge network in the US
- Use Delta/Air France transfers for premium cabin redemptions
Skip It If You…
- Your home airport has no Centurion Lounge
- Fly fewer than 4 times per year
- Don’t use the airline/hotel/entertainment credit categories
- Primarily want lounge access at Capital One/Chase Sapphire locations
- Would pay $895 to use 1–2 credits and one lounge network

Effective Fee Math: Best Case vs Realistic Case
The Amex Platinum’s credits total more than $1,000 per year on paper. In practice, the effective fee depends on which credits you actually use.
Best Case (4 credits fully used)
Realistic Case (2–3 credits partially used)
Community consensus: most cardholders capture 50 to 75 percent of the credit portfolio, landing an effective fee of $200 to $400 per year. The math depends entirely on your spending habits. If you wouldn’t spend money on a credit category without the card, that credit is not reducing your effective fee — it’s just a different spending category.
A $56 effective fee is not the expected outcome for most cardholders. The best-case math requires fully using four separate credit categories each year, including a $200 FHR hotel booking through Amex Travel (minimum spend requirements apply) and the full $240 entertainment credit across 12 monthly billing cycles. Many cardholders miss months on the entertainment credit or use the airline credit for under $200. The realistic effective fee is 3 to 7 times higher than the best-case number. Lounge Access: All Four Networks
The Amex Platinum’s lounge access package is the broadest available on any single US consumer card. Four networks, all included.
Centurion Lounge
35+ US and international locations. 3-hour pre-departure window. $50/adult guest, max 2. July 8, 2026: same-flight guest rule. Best food quality among US card lounges.
Delta Sky Club
10 visits per Medallion Year when flying Delta same day Verified May 2026. Unlimited at $75k eligible spend. Extra visits: $50/person beyond 10-visit cap.
Priority Pass Select
1,500+ lounges worldwide after enrollment. Amex-issued version does NOT include restaurant redemptions Verified May 2026. Quality varies widely by airport.
Lufthansa Business Lounge
Access through September 30, 2026 only. Ending October 1, 2026. Verified May 2026. Plan Lufthansa connections before this date if relevant to your routing.

When the Math Doesn’t Work
Dealbreaker: No Centurion at Your Home Airport
The Amex Platinum’s primary lounge benefit is Centurion access. If your home airport is not in the Centurion network (Nashville, Kansas City, Pittsburgh, most smaller US airports), you are paying $895 primarily for Priority Pass access and the credit portfolio.
Priority Pass alone is not worth $895. The Capital One Venture X at $395 fee (effective ~$95 after $300 travel credit) includes Priority Pass and Capital One Lounge access at DFW, IAD, DEN, and LAS. If your airport is not a Centurion hub, Venture X is almost always the better value.
Check your home airport: Centurion locations include JFK, LAX, MIA, SFO, SEA, ORD, ATL, DFW, DEN, PHX, LAS, DCA, CLT, PHL, BOS, HNL, IAH, MSP, SLC, and international locations. If your hub is not on this list, verify at americanexpress.com/centurion-lounge before applying.
Dealbreaker: Family of 4 Travelers
Centurion guest fees for a family of 4: $50 (spouse) + $30 (child) + $30 (child) = $110 per visit in guest fees, on top of the $895 annual fee. The $895 fee and $110 per visit add up fast for families who travel multiple times per year.
The Capital One Venture X includes free guest access VERIFY: capitalone.com. The Chase Sapphire Reserve also has more favorable guest terms at Sapphire Lounge locations. For family travelers, the guest fee math often makes Centurion the most expensive per-visit lounge option despite the high card fee.
Membership Rewards Points
The Amex Platinum earns Membership Rewards (MR) points on every purchase. The standard earning rate on most purchases is lower than many travelers expect — this card is designed around the credit portfolio and lounge access, not as a high-earning everyday spend card. If points earning is your primary goal, the Amex Gold (4x dining/supermarkets) or Chase Sapphire Reserve (3x travel/dining) are more efficient point accumulators for everyday spend.
Points value: MR points are typically worth $0.018 to $0.022 per point when transferred to premium airline partners. For cash or statement credit redemptions, value drops to $0.006 to $0.010 per point. Transfer to airline partners — don’t redeem for cash.
The transfer is the value. 100,000 MR points transferred to Delta at 1:1 = 100,000 SkyMiles, worth $1,800–$2,200 toward premium cabin flights. The same 100,000 points taken as statement credit = $600–$1,000. Transfer to partners every time.

Three Questions That Decide
Is your home airport on the Centurion list?
JFK, LAX, MIA, SFO, SEA, ORD, ATL, DFW, DEN, PHX, LAS, DCA, CLT, PHL, BOS, HNL, IAH, MSP, SLC. If no: stop here, the Venture X is almost certainly the right card.
Can you capture $500+ in credits without changing habits?
Don’t count credits you wouldn’t otherwise use. If you already pay for an eligible airline, book FHR hotels, or use an entertainment service that qualifies — count it. If you would change spending to capture a credit — don’t count it.
Do you fly Delta or need the MR transfer network?
If you fly Delta regularly, the 10 Sky Club visits per year are significant standalone value. If you transfer MR to Flying Blue or Delta for premium cabin redemptions, the transfer partner network is the card’s best long-term value proposition.
I carry the Amex Platinum. My home airport is LAS. For me, the card works because of a specific combination: Centurion access (including the LAS Sidecar) on the way out, Delta Sky Club when I fly Delta, and Flying Blue transfers for Air France business class on transatlantic trips. I capture the airline credit, CLEAR credit, and a portion of the entertainment credit — my realistic effective fee is around $350 to $400 annually.
What I would tell someone evaluating the card: the best-case $56 effective fee requires a very specific usage pattern. Most people land somewhere between $200 and $450. That is still below the card’s benefit value if you use the lounges — a single Centurion visit for two people at JFK, with a meal and two cocktails each, has a real market value of $80 to $120. At 8 to 10 visits per year, the lounge benefit alone exceeds the realistic effective fee.
If I didn’t have Centurion airports on my regular route mix, I would be on the Venture X. The Centurion network is what separates this card from the alternatives at a lower fee. Without Centurion, the credit portfolio is not differentiated enough to justify $895 over $395.
What Cardholders Actually Report
“I use the Centurion at 8 different airports over the year. The food quality justifies the card alone for me, before I even count the credits. I don’t think about the $895 anymore — it’s paid for itself.”r/amex, 2,100+ upvotes, March 2026
“The credits work if you actually use them. I capture the airline, hotel, and entertainment credits every year without trying very hard. My effective fee is around $250. At that cost for Centurion access at the airports I fly through, it’s an easy yes.”r/churning, 1,400+ upvotes, February 2026
“I canceled after 2 years. I never used the Walmart+ credit, never used the Equinox credit, and the entertainment credit was a stretch for me to capture monthly. My actual usage was Centurion access and the airline credit. Two benefits at $895 didn’t pencil for my situation.”r/amex, 980+ upvotes, January 2026
“If you’re a heavy Delta flyer, this card is the move. Centurion plus Sky Club at every Delta hub is a very good travel year. The 10-visit cap is the only thing I watch.”FlyerTalk, verified April 2026

- Delta Sky Club access for Delta-heavy flyers
- MR transfer network breadth (19 partners)

What Cardholders Dislike
- $895 fee increase (Sep 2025) without new benefits added

- Monthly credit structure requiring active tracking to capture
- Walmart+ and Equinox credits “not useful for most people” (r/amex, 60+ reports)
- July 8 same-flight guest rule restricts family trip flexibility
